Definition

Hispaniola is the second-largest and most populous island of the Antilles, Hispaniola lies between the islands of Cuba to the west, and Puerto Rico to the east.

Hispaniola derives from the Spanish word, La Espanola and it is located directly within the hurricane belt.

The island of Hispaniola has two separate countries in it:

The Republic of Haiti occupies the western third and the Dominican Republic the eastern two-thirds of the island.

Christopher Columbus first arrived on the island of in western Hispaniola (present day Haiti), on December 5, 1492, and on his second voyage in 1493 to eastern Hispaniola (present day Dominican Republic).
