Saint MartinDefinition Saint Martin is a tropical island in the northeast Caribbean, about 186 miles east of Puerto Rico. The Island of Saint Martin is divided roughly in half between France and the Netherlands Antilles. Saint Martin is the smallest inhabited sea island divided between two nations. The southern Dutch half is known as The island area of Sint Maarten (Dutch: Eilandgebied Sint Maarten) and it is part of the Netherlands Antilles. The northern half of the island of Saint Martin is known as the Collectivite de Saint-Martin (English: Collectivity of St. Martin) and it is an overseas collectivity of France (French: collectivites d'outre-mer). The two main towns in Saint Martin are Philipsburg on the Dutch side and Marigot on the French side. Together, the two territories are known as "St-Martin" or "St. Maarten".
